Stumbling on Happiness is a non-fiction book by Daniel Gilbert. It was published in the United States and Canada in 2006 by Knopf, and has been translated into 20 languages. It is a New York Times bestseller

Summary

Gilbert's central thesis is that, through perception and cognitive biases, people imagine the future poorly, in particular what will make them happy. He argues that imagination fails in three ways:

1.Imagination tends to add and remove details, but people do not realize that key details may be fabricated or missing from the imagined scenario.

2.Imagined futures (and pasts) are more like the present than they actually will be (or were).

3.Imagination fails to realize that things will feel differently once they actually happen -- most notably, the psychological immune system will make bad things feel not so bad as they are imagined to feel.

The advice Gilbert offers is to use other people's experiences to predict the future, instead of imagining it. It is surprising how similar people are in much of their experiences, he says. He does not expect too many people to heed this advice, as our culture, accompanied by various thinking tendencies, is against this method of decision making.

Also, Gilbert covers the topic of 'filling in' or the frequent use of patterns, by the mind, to connect events which we do actually recall with other events we expect or anticipate fit into the expected experience. This 'filling in' is also used by our eyes and optic nerves to remove our blind spot or scotoma, and instead substitute what our mind expects to be present in the blind spot.

The book is written accessibly for the layperson, generally avoiding abstruse terminology and explaining common quirks of reasoning through the simple experiments that exploited them.

Daniel Todd Gilbert (born November 5, 1957) is Professor of Psychology at Harvard University. He is a social psychologist who is known for his research (with Timothy Wilson of the University of Virginia) on affective forecasting, with a special emphasis on cognitive biases such as the impact bias. He is the author of the international bestseller Stumbling on Happiness, which has been translated into more than 25 languages and which won the 2007 Royal Society Prizes for Science Books.

At the age of 19, Gilbert was a high school dropout who wanted to be a science fiction writer. In an attempt to improve his writing skills, he took a bus to the local community college to enroll in a creative writing class. When he was told that the creative writing class was full, he signed up for the only class that was still open: Introduction to Psychology. Gilbert eventually received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from University of Colorado at Denver in 1981 and a Ph.D. in social psychology from Princeton University's Department of Psychology in 1985.

Gilbert has won numerous awards for his teaching and research, including the Harvard College Professorship, the Phi Beta Kappa Teaching Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the American Psychological Association’s Distinguished Scientific Award for an Early Career Contribution to Psychology. In 2008 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His essays have appeared in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Forbes, TIME, and others. His short stories have appeared in Amazing Stories and Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine, as well as other magazines and anthologies. He has been a guest on numerous radio and television shows including 20/20, the Today Show, Charlie Rose, and The Colbert Report. He is the host of the 6-hour NOVA television series "This Emotional Life" which will air on PBS in 2010.

Global Garden

Winner, Junior Prize 2006


Global Garden is a beautifully detailed pop-up book where children can learn about the origins of every day foods and clothing. For those that have ever wondered where sugar comes from, or what a chocolate tree looks like, where jeans grow or what a bicycle tyre plant looks like the answers are all in Global Garden. Friendly bees guide the reader through the book. There are also some rather green-fingered moles dotted about for young readers to spot.

The judges said:

Ecsite-UK's Rosalind Mist, who coordinated the Junior Judging Panels, said; "The young readers just loved the interactivity of this book; Kate and Jennie really made it exciting for them to explore the environmental issues on their doorsteps. The young judges thought that the book is informative and conscientious, conveying serious issues to the children in a clear and stimulating way."

Zachary (10 years-old) said; "This book really caught my attention and when I did look in the book it was full of pictures and really colourful. They had pop-ups and even babies would like it." Tabby (14) was equally delighted with the book, adding; "We wish our text books were like this".

Anne Fine added; "The Global Garden is a super read. It really is a beautifully put-together book: well-written and fact-filled as well as entertaining and engaging. Kate and Jennie were able to understand exactly what the young readers wanted out of a science book."

Electric Universe - How Electricity Switched on the Modern World By David Bodanis

Winner, General Prize 2006


Writer and social science lecturer David Bodanis has won the Royal Society’s Aventis Prizes for Science Books General Prize, with his book Electric Universe – How Electricity Switched on the Modern World.

In Electric Universe, Bodanis takes the reader on a journey from the cold waters of the Atlantic to the streets of Hamburg during a World War II firestorm, following the tale of our discovery of electricity and its uses. The result is a synergy of insightful scientific account with tales of romance, inspiration, eccentricity and fraud.

The judges said:

Nick Ross, chair of this year's General Prize Judging Panel said: "This book is wonderfully accessible – it’s a huge canvas but it reads like a novel, with twists and turns that would make a fiction writer happy to have been so inventive, and opens up a universe of facts that would scarcely be credible in an imaginary tale. It’s simply a very good read and if you have little or no interest in electricity, after reading this you will have."

Steve Jones, professor of genetics at University College London, who sat on the judging panel, said: "This is a science book for the people."

The renowned science communicator Simon Singh called the book: "A technological odyssey complete with heroes and villains, triumph and tragedy - a true scientific adventure."

David Bodanis is a popular science writer. Originally from Chicago, David lived in France for ten years. He is now based in London.

His books include E=mc2: A Biography of the World's Most Famous Equation and Electric Universe, winner of the Aventis Prize. He has been translated into 26 languages and featured on the cover of The Economist.

Bodanis is also a popular conference speaker. His agency JLA state that his speech "highlights future trends in society, technology and the economy, with particular refence to energy and climate change."
