Eight-year-old Virginia O'Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of New York's Sun, and the quick response was printed as an unsigned editorial Sept. 21, 1897. The work of veteran newsman Francis Pharcellus Church has since become history's most reprinted newspaper editorial, appearing in part or whole in dozens of languages in books, movies, and other editorials, and on posters and stamps.

Virginia O'Hanlon wrote: "DEAR EDITOR: I am 8 years old.
"Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.
"Papa says, 'If you see it in THE SUN it's so.'
"Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?
"VIRGINIA O'HANLON.
"115 WEST NINETY-FIFTH STREET."

They do not believe except [what] they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.
Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.
Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.
You may tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.
No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now.

1897年，《美國紐約太陽報》收到一封來信：編輯先生，我今年8歲。我的一些朋友說：“聖誕老人是不存在的。”
我問爸爸，爸爸說：“去問問太陽報看，報社說有，那就真的有了。”
請告訴我，真的有聖誕老人嗎？
薇吉妮亞（Virginia O’Hanlon）太陽報收到信，交由報社的資深編輯邱池（Francis P Church）回答：薇吉妮亞，你的朋友說沒有聖誕老人，那是錯的。
他們只相信眼前能看得見的東西，把看不見的，或不懂的事都當作是假的。
不過，你長大以後便會明白，人能用眼睛看到的，或是用腦袋瞭解的都非常有限。
在浩瀚的宇宙裡，人就像是小蟲、螞蟻一樣渺小，我們智慧有限，不可能知道所有東西。
是的，薇吉妮亞，真的有聖誕老人。在這個世界上，如同有愛，有同情心，有誠實一樣，也有聖誕老人。
如果沒有聖誕老人，這個世界多麼沒意思啊。就好像沒有了薇吉妮亞，沒有童心，沒有詩，沒有愛，沒有樂趣，那這個世界豈不是毫無意義？
世界上最真實的事，很多是肉眼看不見的。我們看不到小仙女在草地上跳舞，這就能證明沒有小仙女嗎？
沒有人能夠想像看不見的東西，有多麼美妙。
你把洋娃娃的衣服掀開，可以看到甚麼會讓洋娃娃發出聲音，但世界上一些看不見的事，往往是被一層幃幕遮著，就算是力氣很大，也無法掀開來看個清楚。
只有詩歌、關懷、愛才能掀開這一層幃幕，讓我們看到原先看不到的美好世界。
這些都是真的嗎？你問。啊，薇吉妮亞，天下沒有比這更真的了。
聖誕老人會永遠活著。1000年後，不，一萬年後，他仍然會活在孩子們的心中，繼續給孩子帶來希望和快樂。
這篇社論，此後每一年聖誕節之前，都會刊登在《紐約太陽報》，直到此報於1949年停刊為止。
但是，它並不因此而中斷。世界許多報章在聖誕節前，都會重登；它也成為報業史上流傳最廣，最重要的社論。
