Royal Society Prizes for Science Books


The Royal Society Prizes for Science Books is an annual award for the previous year's best general science writing and best science writing for children. The nominees and winners are decided by the Royal Society, the UK national academy of science. It is generally considered to be the most prestigious science writing award, and is sometimes referred to as the Booker Prize of science writing.

The prizes were established in 1988 and were known as the Science Book Prizes until 1990 when they were sponsored by Rhône-Poulenc and became known as the Rhône-Poulenc Prizes for Science Books. Between 2000 and 2006, following the merger of Rhône-Poulenc with Hoechst AG to form Aventis, the prizes were renamed the Aventis Prizes for Science Books. Since 2007 the prizes have been owned and managed by the Royal Society.

Judging Process

Entries are open to any book published in English in the preceding calendar year, that can be purchased in the UK. Two judging panels, one for the General Prize (for best general science writing) and one for the Junior Prize (for best science writing for young people up to the age of 14) assess the entries and select a longlist of around 12 books and then a shortlist of six books. The General Prize panel then select the winner. The winner of the Junior Prize is selected by panels of school-age children (a total of 800 in 75 groups for the 2005 Prizes). The winner in each category receives £10,000. £1000 per book is awarded to the authors of the remaining shortlisted books.

為鼓勵成人科普書籍及青少年科普讀物的創作、出版,1988年英國皇家學院(Royal Society)得到Copus公司的贊助,設置了「科學圖書獎」(Science Book Prizes),隨著贊助公司的更迭,2000年「科學圖書獎」名稱以贊助公司Aventis命名,更名為「艾凡提斯科學書獎」(Aventis Prizes for Science Books)。

「艾凡提斯科學書獎」分為兩大獎項,成人獎(General Prize)及青少年獎(Junior Prize);前者主要為適合成人閱讀的科普書籍,後者則適合十四歲以下兒童閱讀的科普讀物,得獎者均可獲得10,000英磅的獎金,入圍者也有1,000英磅的獎金。

成人獎的評選方式是由五位評審從六部入選作品中選出得獎作品,但青少年獎的評審方式則較為特別,是由五位成人評審挑出六部入選作品後,再將推選得獎作品的工作交由十四歲以下學童共同票選決定。

艾凡提斯科學書獎每年均辦理評選工作,長期以來對於科普讀物的推廣已有相當的貢獻,並已成為英國著名的非小說文學獎項了。

The Age of Wonder wins Royal Society Prize for Science Books

Richard Holmes' extraordinary account of how science inspired the romantic generation, has also inspired the judges of the Royal Society Prize for Science Books. He was announced the winner at the Royal Society today (Tuesday 15th September 2009).

In "The Age of Wonder", Richard Holmes investigates how a fascination for science swept across Britain at the end of 18th century, using the stories of the scientists involved to engage the reader. The book covers a variety of disciplines including astronomy, chemistry, botany, philosophy, and even poetry, as it explores how the science of the time evolved.

Richard Holmes said: "I did a lot of hot air ballooning in researching this book and I can tell you that the feeling of going up in a balloon is nothing compared to what I feel at winning this prize. I am elated and I hope not to come down too soon."

He added: "One of the things I've leant in writing a about science is the vital importance of teamwork both in the laboratory and the field. This may require a new kind of biography to be written."

Martin Rees, President of the Royal Society, presented the £10,000 prize to Richard Holmes. The award ceremony was held at the Royal Society. The Age of Wonder has triumphed over other strong contenders in the shortlist, including Neil Shubin's Your Inner Fish and Ben Goldacre's Bad Science to win the prestigious award for science writing.

Sir Tim Hunt FRS, Chair of the Judges, said: "This is a book about real heroes, scientists like Joseph Banks, Humphrey Davy and William Herschel, who changed our understanding of the world forever. It's extremely accessible, wearing its science lightly while placing it within a much wider cultural context. We all found it a wonderful, eclectic and compelling read, completely absorbing, romantic and original. An extraordinary achievement and a truly worthy winner."

The winner was announced at an event at the Royal Society on Tuesday 15th September 2009 and awarded £10,000. The authors of each shortlisted book were awarded £1000.

Review: The Age of Wonder by Richard Holmes

It wasn't only the Romantic poets who had a sense of the sublime; the age's scientists did too, says Jonathan Bate
Romantic science? Did not William Blake fulminate against 'Bacon and Newton sheathed in dismal steel, their terrors hanging like iron scourges over Albion'? Didn't John Keats say that Newtonian optics had unwoven the magic of the rainbow?

Isn't the great Romantic-Gothic novel, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, an indictment of science's hubristic capacity to destroy us all, a prophecy of the time we are now nearing, when a human clone fashioned in the laboratory will turn against its creator?

It is this story of the opposition between the Romantic poets and the science of their time that Richard Holmes sets out to undo.

No one could be better qualified for the task than the biographer of the two Romantics who showed most interest in science, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Percy Bysshe Shelley.

Building on a generation of revisionist scholarship that has been barely visible beyond the groves of academe, Holmes triumphantly shows that the Romantic age was one of symbiosis rather than opposition, in which scientists such as Sir Humphry Davy were also poets and poets such as Coleridge had a shaping influence on scientists - we discover indeed that it was Coleridge who was responsible for the early 19th-century invention of the term 'scientist' as an alternative to the older nomenclature 'natural philosopher'.

This was the era during which the astronomers William and Caroline Herschel discovered a new planet (Uranus) and increased the number of known nebulae from 100 to 2,500. The era in which Davy discovered the properties of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and invented the miner's safety lamp. And in which the hot air balloon allowed humans to fly for the first time in history.

Scientists, like poets, need a sense of wonder, a sense of humility and a sense of humour. Holmes has all three in abundance.

His wit is usually understated. Thus with regard to Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier, the Parisian inventor of a gasmask, a hydrogen blowtorch and a new theory of thunder, who met his untimely end on a pioneering cross-channel balloon flight: 'He had, in effect, invented the new profession of test pilot. He had the right stuff.'

No biographer is better than Holmes at evoking the thrill of the chase. Here he is, hot on the heels of Davy's old tutor, Thomas Beddoes, who was that rare thing, a radically left-wing Oxford don.

Writing to a colleague about some medical work, Beddoes passingly damned the Tory Prime Minister William Pitt. In a gesture of irony he enclosed with the letter a brown silk hat-ribbon printed with the patriotic slogan 'licensed to wear Hair Powder - Pitt for ever!'

The meaning of this? It's elementary. Holmes explains: 'In 1795 Pitt had levied a tax on hair powder, to help raise funds for military campaigns abroad. The ribbon fell out of Beddoes's letter as I unfolded it in the Truro archive, and I let out a republican whoop! that almost led to my ejection.'

Such was the range of scientific innovation in the period, so many the players in the drama, that Holmes has set himself a fearful structural problem.

He solves it by means of an elegant device. At the heart of The Age of Wonder are linked biographies of three scientific knights.

First comes Sir Joseph Banks, whose visit to Tahiti revealed not only hitherto unknown botanical riches but also an alluringly Romantic lifestyle, all nudity and free love in the manner of Rousseau's noble savages. The British were quick to bring that to an end courtesy of their sailors' syphilitic sperm.

Banks returned home and became president of the Royal Society. One dimension of Holmes's book is to offer a history of that organisation, during the transitional period when it was still partly a gentleman's club.

Recurring themes here are the exclusion of Michael Faraday and the advent of rival, more professional organisations, notably the Royal Institution and the British Association for the Advancement of Science.

The second knight is Herschel, who began as a provincial outsider, an amateur viewed with suspicion by the astronomer royal, but whose penetration into deep space forced the Royal Society to accept him.

There was not, however, a fellowship for his sister Caroline, who swept the heavens with equal assiduity. Holmes restores her to the place she deserves.

Third and foremost comes Davy, with one foot in Banks's world and the other in Coleridge's West Country.

Indeed, when researching the properties of tannins he had a pair of shoes made, one tanned with catechu brought back from Tahiti by Banks and the other with oak bark provided by Coleridge's Nether Stowey patron, the tanner Tom Poole.
There is a fascinating cast of supporting characters, their names and brief lives helpfully gathered in an appendix.

Among the most significant was Erasmus Darwin, Charles's grandfather, whose footnoted epic The Botanic Garden was the main conduit through which new scientific knowledge passed into poetry.

The only problem with Holmes's structure is that it leaves little room for scientists who worked outside the establishment of the Royal Society.

Joseph Priestley in particular, whose chemical experiments gave Davy his foundations, is given short shrift. Equally, there are only passing mentions of James Hutton, whose discovery of 'deep time' in geology was as significant as the Herschels' journey into deep space.

The book ends with Charles Darwin setting sail on the Beagle and with anticipation of the moment when The Origin of Species will turn the world upside-down, but geology, the science of yawning gaps, is itself a conspicuous absence from Holmes's entrancing tour.

Picture yourself a few decades from now, in a world in which average temperatures are three degrees higher than they are now. On the edge of Greenland, rivers ten times the size of the Amazon are gushing off the ice sheet into the north Atlantic.

Displaced victims of North Africa's drought establish a new colony on Greenland's southern tip, one of the few inhabitable areas not already crowded with environmental refugees. Vast pumping systems keep the water out of most of Holland, but the residents of Bangladesh and the Nile Delta enjoy no such protection. Alien as it all sounds, Mark Lynas's incredible new book is not science-fiction; nor is it sensationalist. The six degrees of the title refer to the terrifying possibility that average temperatures will rise by up to six degrees within the next hundred years. This is the first time we have had a reliable picture of how the collapse of our civilisation will unfold unless urgent action is taken.

Mark Lynas (born 1973) is a British author, journalist and environmental activist who focuses on climate change. He is a contributor to New Statesman, Ecologist, Granta and Geographical magazines, and The Guardian and The Observer newspapers in the UK; he also worked on the film The Age of Stupid, set for release in February 2009. He holds a degree in history and politics from the University of Edinburgh. He lives in Oxford, England.

In 2004, Lynas' High Tide: The Truth About Our Climate Crisis was published by Macmillan Publishers on its Picador imprint. He has also contributed to a book entitled Fragile Earth: Views of a Changing World published by Collins, which presents before-and-after images of some of the natural changes which have happened to the world in recent years, including the Indian Ocean tsunami and Hurricane Katrina, alongside a bleak look at the effects of mankind's actions on the planet.

In January 2007 Lynas published Gem Carbon Counter, containing instruction to calculate people's personal carbon emissions and recommendations about how to reduce their impact on the atmosphere.

In 2007 he published Six Degrees: Our Future on a Hotter Planet, a book detailing the progressive effect of global warming in several planetary ecosystems, from 1 degree to 6 degrees and further of average temperature rise of the planet. Special coverage is given to the positive feedback mechanisms that could dramatically accelerate the climate change, possibly putting the climate on a runaway path. As a possible end scenario the release of methane hydrate from the bottom of the oceans could replicate the end-Permian extinction event.

In 2008 National Geographic released a documentary film based on Lynas's book, entitled Six Degrees Could Change the World.

In November 2009 the President of the Maldives appointed him as his government's advisor on climate change.

Richard Holmes


Biographer Richard Holmes was born in London, England on 5 November 1945 and educated at Downside School and Churchill College, Cambridge. His first book, Shelley:The Pursuit, was published in 1974 and won a Somerset Maugham Award. The first volume of his biography of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Coleridge: Early Visions, was published in 1989 and won the Whitbread Book of the Year award. Dr Johnson & Mr Savage (1993), an account of Johnson's undocumented friendship with the notorious poet Richard Savage, won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize (for biography) in 1993. The second volume of his study of Coleridge, Coleridge: Darker Reflections, was published in 1998. It won the Duff Cooper Prize, the Heinemann Award and was shortlisted for the first Samuel Johnson Prize awarded in 1999.

Richard Holmes writes and reviews regularly for various journals and newspapers, including the New York Review of Books. His most recent book, Sidetracks: Explorations of a Romantic Biographer (2000), continues the exploration of his own highly original biographical method that he first wrote about in Footsteps: Adventures of a Romantic Biographer (1985). He is also editor of a new series of editions of classic English biographies that includes work by Samuel Johnson, Daniel Defoe and William Godwin.

His latest book, The Age of Wonder (2008), is an examination of the life and work of the scientists of the Romantic age who laid the foundations of modern science. It was shortlisted for the 2009 Samuel Johnson Prize.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, a Fellow of the British Academy and was awarded an OBE in 1992. He was awarded an honorary Litt.D. in 2000 by the University of East Anglia, where he was appointed Professor of Biographical Studies in September 2001.

据报道,皇家学会科普书奖地位崇高,霍金的《胡桃里的宇宙》也曾夺得2002年的科普书奖;其另一名作《时间简史》也在1989年打入候选名单。本届科普书奖,《快乐为什么不幸福》击败讲述全球最后一只加拉帕哥斯乌龟的《寂寞的乔治》(Lonesome George)等5本候选书籍,赢得1万镑奖金。作者吉尔伯特是哈佛大学心理系教授,一直从事有关“情感预测”的研究,《快乐为什么不幸福》一书指出,追求快乐是人类其中一种最本能的冲动,吉尔伯特透过科研、哲学及生活实例,让人明白为何总是无法令自己快乐。大部分人穷一生时间想象美好的将来,但现实与理想总存在大截差距,此书深入浅出地教导我们如何正确追寻快乐。

评审团主席皮林格教授称赞所有入围书籍都非常出色。他形容“吉尔伯特的作品可读性极高,他以风趣幽默手法,破解追求快乐背后的科学原理。他透过认知科学及心理学,协助我们了解何以会作出某些决定。”他指此书易于阅读,且充满笑料。

吉尔伯特说:“很高兴从全球最历史悠久的学术性学会获得这奖项,很少国家会向一本关于快乐而又带点胡闹的书籍颁发科学奖,英国明白到启蒙与娱乐乃相辅相成。

”学会同时亦颁发科普书少年奖,候选名单全是供14岁以下小孩阅读的书籍,今年得奖者是英国广播公司主持人哈蒙德的作品《Can You Feel the Force?》,带领小读者探索物理世界。
